for you Allison fans:D
E production class
Lead boat was Tom Toth. That Allison was US-1 for Four years when they ran it with a 85 merc on the back prior to switching to a E motor.

My friend Bill Brown is in the Stream. He owned Picks Boat House out of Akron, Ohio and Was a Stream dealer.

The Vipers were competetive, but the Venturas ruled.

# 392 actually did very well at the 1975 OPC Nationals.
Allen Nelson from Kankakee, IL had Ben Robertson in his elim. heat. The two fought between 1st and 2nd on each lap they raced, only to have Benny win at the end by a small margin.
In the final Allen went into the first turn in 1st or 2nd place only to cut off by another Hydrosteam (whom I won't tell who it is) and was pushed back to maybe 9th place.
This boat always showed 79 mph.on the Keller speedo.
Allen consistly won over Ron Baker ( factory Hydrosteam Driver).
The boat finialy sustained major hull damage in Madison, WI (from rough water).

"THE VENTURA IN YOUR POST DID NOT RULE THAT EVENT. I THINK THAT PHOTO WAS TAKEN AT THE NATIONALS IN 75 AT MIAMI AND I WON WITH A VIPER."

1975 in Miami was my first big time boat race and the first time I ever met Jim. My friends who had a long relationship with Merc and had known Jim for years were showin' me around and we came upon the old "Raged But Rite" Viper. I laughingly said somethin' like "boy that thing sure deserves the Raged part of that name". My buddy said, you won't be laughin' at it when he puts it in the water. Boy were they right.

Mod 90???? I don't remember that class.

This thread started as "1976" OPC Nationals, and flipped back to Miami in '75. Wasn't it held at Eufaula in '76?

Dayton, Ohio in 1976, Eufala was 1977 I believe.

Mod 90 was big at that time, at least in regions 7 and 8.
Started right after UI died.

I remember this little hydro taking mod 50.
The driver of the Hydro was Lee Sutter who edged Jimbo. That was quite a race.

I'don't remember a class of mod 90 but that was 30 yaers ago. it was the first big race I went to.

Mod 90 was a national class for 3 or 4 years starting in 1975. It was meant to allow the use of the obsolete 90 ci UI engines (GT115, X115, BP1000) with modifications. Jimbo won the mod 90 race at the 76 nationals. He stepped-up with his mod 50 rig.

Great photos thanks for posting them Mike. Is the yellow boat 191 (jimbo) a Velden? Man, I'd love to have one of those in my fleet.

IS DOUG PEARL. IT IS NOT A MCCALL. THE 185 BOAT IS A MCCALL, BUT AN EARLIER MODEL.

Doug's boat was a "Scorpion" which was some kind of hybrid Miles/Zonkercraft.

Weren't most of the McCall boats open cockpit knee riders? I remember seeing a Dutchman driving one to victory in a 1971 class powered by a GT115.

That little hydro that won Mod 50 is on a rack in my garage -I'd post a picture but the system says my picture is too large. I need to figure out how to shrink my photo. I currently run a Merc 850 with stacks on a 12" mid with a 14:15 Speedmaster on it - just for fun. It is an awsome ride and a bit tricky - wants to go sideways now and then.

I thought the hydro didn't win because the welded aluminum plate mid section broke. Was it an A & H hydro ?

Yes it is an A&H. I've been told it's the last boat they built - I've been trying to get more history on the boat.

I don't remember who won but I remember Jimbo and him duking it out. Jimbo, of course, had him on the turns but Lee would catch him by the end of the straights.

I raced Mod 90 class at the 76 Dayton nationals. I was running in 3rd place at the end of lap one just behind Jimbo when I blew over. I would love to have some pictures of that race. All I have are after the blow over when the boat was towed in.White boat number 701.Also race several McCall boats in SH class. No, John did not like paint. He did GREAT work with wood!!

John McCall also hated polyurethane. I put some on my bottom once and he wouldn't work on my boat till I got it off.

I THINK, IS THE START OF THE UJ CLASS. IT LOOKS LIKE BENNY ROBERTSON'S STINSON ON THE INSIDE, IN THE PHOTO. IF IT IS, I WAS ON THE INSIDE OF BENNY IN A MCCALL SITDOWN TUNNEL WITH A VERY OUTDATED 1250 SUPER BP. I WAS RUNNING STRONG UNTIL I BROKE A CRANKSHAFT ON THE SECOND LAP.

The first picture is the UJ start but the boat on the inside (that looks like it has a bimini on it) is Terry Leatherby (#898), and the boat is (was) a Nauss built by then OMC prop engineer Hal Nauss.
Heres a pic of Terry in 1977. At this race (in Rockford Il) he ran a Merc.

I think so.... was Rudie from New York or Maryland and was it a white boat? if so, he came out to Rockford, Illinois for one of the GLBC races with another driver, I think his name was Herb. I may have pictures from that race, I will look. I think it was '78 or '79. (I'm surprised by what I remember when I hear a familiar name)

That driver would be Kenny Stevenson of the Just Add Water racing team from RN Thompson , Indianapolis IN

Bernie sent me this to add to this thread:

"I have only one (1) picture that shows the Mod-50 A&H Hydro at the Dayton National Championships. The picture is from an elevated dock and the boat is on stand with the bow in the water.

Chris, I don’t know if you remember this boat as this was built to look like my 350 Hydro and Ron’s 250 Hydro? We didn’t want anyone (OMC) to know we were running a hydro at Dayton . The class was 100% tunnels. This was one of those projects that had a real purpose!!! OMC had a stronger engine then Mercury and Jimbo and Jeff Brown had factory Mod-50 tunnels that dominated the class. Mercury (Gary G) asked Ron Anderson, Bob Hering, and I if we could build a hydro to go beat the OMC’s at the Dayton Nationals. We agreed!

Ron and Bobby built the boat at Ron’s, put the Mod-50 power head on a Mercury “D” tower housing and used a “D” gear case. We built two props by cutting a blade off a 2 blade “D” Michigan prop and welding 2 blades back on the hub – bingo, the first 3 blade Michigan ever!!! No stock or Alky guys used 3 blade props at that time!!! Then, I sent the props to R. Allen Smith in Louisiana (my prop guy) who made to the specs we thought would work. 6/3/4” diameter x 12 ½” Pitch. Bob Hetzel at Mercury really helped with the props. In fact, he did all the tough stuff with the support of Dick Snyder at Mercury.

We tested it at Kaukauna , WI . along with all the alky equipment. We tested for two days 2 weeks before the Alky Nationals and the Dayton race was the week following.

We tested the 250 runabout, 250 hydro, 350 hydro, and the Mod 50 project.

It went 93 MPH on the first pass and 95 MPH on the second. It vibrated really bad, had way too much acceleration. Funny thing is, it went the same speed as my 350 hydro.

You should have seen to look on Jack Leeks face when we unloaded the hydro off the trailer. As he thought it was one of our Alky boats.
WE Won!!! And, Mercury took all the equipment away from us the next week and tried to use it to run through the Kilos. Wrong boat, gear case, props, and wrong guys."

Calvin, I have that boat now and have just about finished its restoration. I do have a Johnson RS ready to go back on it. The boat was only raced a few times, first by Rudy Foote (#86) and later by Randy Gohr (#60). The Boat was painted and repaired by John Hervat. The boat is a Molinari and was painted the Johnson Colors. I'd love the hear more about the boat and its drivers.

This is the only racing shot of the boat I have. Don't know any of the details.
