I have a sst60/70 14' hull and want to put a motor on it. I do not have any plans of racing it just want to have a neat toy. I have a stock 2001 50 hp Merc and a 18 pitch Chopper from a previous toy. My ? is will the stock 50 plane the boat out and get it going. and if not in stock config. what would I need to do to get it to work. I am on a very tight budget and am not able to buy another motor. your help is greatly needed. Thanks, James

I have no idea how the Merc 50 would run on it (if at all) - but it won't be very fast...

The Johnson/Evinrude SST 60 engines put out around 90 hp, and turn 7000 to 8000 rpm (or more), with a higher pitch prop than you have - just as a comparison with what you have.

My guess is that the Merc 50 is a heavier motor than the SST 60 as well.

I missed out on a boat Rainers brother had that will probably end up the same way. Why not sell it to someone who can race it and already has a SST-60 motor. Any other motor you hang on it will just be a watse of time. Race boats do not make good toy play boats.

For the season boater who has lots of seat time in tunnel baots etc. sure a old tunnel boat would make a nice little lake toy. For the new guy who has no idea what trim and motor set up should be on a tunnel boat its just a wreck waiting to happen.

hit the nail squarely on the head. Sell some stuff, concentrate on something that fits your budget and experience level.

But in "Offshore Terminology" its, "good toy play boats also make a race boat".

Did the sst 60 have different port timing and exhaust tuning than the
49.9 c.i. EP/SE motors, or is it only the bore that differs? For what it's worth, a Merc 500 (same from about 1961-1990) would push a DP V-bottom over 50 mph, in DE the motor would push a tunnel 65-70mph. Further, all Merc 500s, Johnson/Evinrude 75s could turn 7000-8000 RPM on a tunnel. My stock EP motor was limited to 6700-7000 RPM due to gearcase drag.
