Nice rigs Special K ! I saw one of those Mercury f1 Seebold copy's in a local HS here in Houston about 10 years ago with that exact engine and the thing had Nitrous on it believe it or not. It was for sale on consignment and they had it in the front window. I think the guy was asking $1200 for it or so. I was very tempted to buy it and didn't. It would have made a very cool toy for sure!

Hey Fichrman2, what's the advantage of the Lawless drive over the standard K&B? I can see the shaft angle is less - that has to help longevity, right?

fichrman2
10-20-2010, 04:54 PM
That , better shape and weight. The HiJacker mount is really sweet, tons of adjustability and you can even run trim on a 3rd channel with it.
Im really a mono guy, but I have been messing around with the tunnels for the last year or so. Kinda hard not to when some of the best RC tunnel racers in the country are right here in my back yard.
The Mod Vp is really gonna be wild to drive , I have only seen em run once and have never driven one myself -lol
Nothing like deep end of the pool ...........

Andy

That sounds cool. Got any links to pics, etc? Will any motor work on that lower? Looks like the 16cc K&B is the biggest nitro marine engine from a manufacturer.

What's the benefits/drawbacks of nitro vs. gas as far as performance? Since we're talking 15# boats (1/4 scale stuff), is the Zenoah a better way to go?

fichrman2
10-21-2010, 06:08 PM
You kinda gotta make the trim deal yourself, as Im not aware of anyone who makes a kit-
though I could be wrong. I will take a few pics of one of the setups when Im in Sowega for the race and post em for ya.
I dont have one on mine yet.
Im thinking that heavy a boat would be better served with a gas setup, just my .02
It would be easier to tune- cheaper on fuel and run for longer periods.
Initial cost is close. Gonna need a lower designed for a gas motor though .

Tell me more about this F1 V8 setup you're building. :) shure .. the gas outboard is a AMPS design . it was in R & D at amps international hobbies before the went bk also the 53 seabolt hull . they never put it out . MR Agnew took what he could back to the UK with him . and made 5 of them . the molds for the tunnel hull were lost over time , so i took the one i had and made a new mold and plug to make them . over time i have found all the tooling for the outboard . one mold is doing a aluminum leg the other mold is injection plastic . they run a flex shaft not the gear like the nitro amps . iwant to do one like the one in the middel pic

The engines in the 3.5 cc Mod-VP class must comply with IMPBA "Sport" rules. Basically, that means the engines can have internal mods but must remain "factory" on the outside and have no tuned exhaust system (no tuned pipes) Also you can't put a K&B powerhead on a Lawless lower, the leg and lower must be the same manufacturer.

I redid this couple years ago when recovering from my back problems but have not run it yet. It is from A/C Boats in Kellowna Canada, never turned real great and would kinda chine walk on long straight runs. I added turn and skid fins, glassed in stringers, Made the radio box adj and got rid of the steering cables and put steel rods, extended the cavitation plate. Did some more porting to the poor K&B 3.5, added remote needle, shortened the Irwin pipe. Should work good for a bit but think it will need more frequent teardowns, it was nuts before as long as every thing works should fly. Can't find any 60% fuel around here, may have to reshim the head and run 25 or 30%, just wont be the same.

I always wanted to have a big tunnel with a motor like the sweetheart is holding. My first one was a 3.5 on a plastic tunnel done as Bill Seebolds Budlight. Didn't take long to overpower it once a guy starter to enhance the motor.
Bill Seebold is great guy, around 94 went to the F1 race in Saskatoon Canada, just started talking to him in the pits and had a nice long chat.

222801

Trimmed out - I don't know much about the Ossi hull but I had inquired about them prior to purchasing a Synthar. The Ossi and Synthar hull are about the same money. I had heard that the Ossi had a tendancy to spin out in tight turns. Both hulls are about the same length. I went with the Synthar Hull just like the one Racejunkie posted. John Vienan is the guy that builds the Synthar hulls. He was a former F1 tunnel boat driver and raced for one of the teams over in Europe.

I was impressed with the hull when I got it. John put some carbon fiber down the center mostly for looks but also for added strength. Eddy de Vries from the Netherlands is the guy you want to contact for more info on these hulls as well as the life-like Merc SSM #6 gearcase. The hull was designed to use the VP lower & midsection pictured on my hull. The midsection can be trimmed up/down. It also has a low water pickup built into the "gearcase" for cooling the engine just like on the full size Merc. I mounted a Quickdraw HT25 powerhead on it that puts out about 7+ hp. I'm still building the tunnel boat and plan to have it on the water by next spring so I don't have any first hand knowledge of how it handles yet. Maybe Racejunkie can comment.

You can reach Eddy via email for updated pricing on the hull and VP outboard lower. His email is vp-outboards@quicknet.nl Eddy, John and Rob are good guys to deal with and have an excellent product.

My current build. It's a 1950s style outboard runabout called "The Meteor". I based it on a plan from an old magazine (can be found at svenson's) and modified it to suit my needs.

Motor will be an Aquacraft EP1 with the stock 550 size motor.

Any name brand of fuel, Red Max, Technology, Odonnell, 50% nitro. McCoy Mc-9 glow plugs. Pretty much any nitro tunnel put the radio box as far forward as it will fit under the cowl. Mount steering servo in the middle of the box with throttle servo right behind it. We will be running Nitro tunnels here in Garden City Saturday if you want to come check us out. If you are related to Todd I used to race Critchfields when he raced.

The popeyes cat is a 50 inch made by International hobbies. The poor thing has had a hard life. Yes that is an inline twin 260 zen in it. The white boat is a 56 inch tunnel made by Performance International. It has a clutched 260 zenoah outboard I custom made using a lower from an old Kanellos outdrive. The silver boat is a Aeromarine sprintcat that is powered by a 35 quickdraw.

It's been a few years since I've played with the rc boats. I have always liked the scale outboards. It's amazing how lately the zenoah outboard has become more common. There were very few of them just a couple of years ago. And, what there was seemed to work not so well. Now there seem to be many options if you want to run one. Is there a AMPS outboard powered by a zen now? I only knew of the prototype and thought there was just the one.

Bob did a test run of them for replacements for people . but a bunch of us purchase all he had . around 150 sets with the shims . I know he is making more at the end of the year .

Here's my beaters.

The Villain came from the neighborhood garage sale for $25 about 10 years ago. Recently I upgraded to a 2.4 GHz Link radio and EVX2 monster truck speed controller from EBay, I run it on a 5300 mAh Lipo.

The Nitro Vee was given to me for free by my neighbor after years of non-use. I freed up the gum-stuck motor and replaced a servo to get it running again. electric start and electric return-to-shore power are super handy.

I must build tough boats as mine is still running and yours was too until you retired it! :smiletest: I am looking forward to the October race. Maybe Foley can get a bunch of the S&F crowd to come. Having moved several times over the last seven years, I'm yet to finish my Zipp Kits Rocket hydro. Also have an old WHH Enforcer hull that needs a new stuffing box built. Might just have to get off my butt and finish them.

This is a twin electric outboard that I'm working on. The hull is 38" with twin 3660's on 5 cell with Hyperformance 3.5cc bullet drives and merc cowls that I made. I've been running one of these motor set ups on my HTB tunnel hull and it works great.

Mike, great work on those alien Merc cowls. Excellent choice with the Hyperformance lower unit as well - I haven't run one, but they look awesome. If you ever consider making more of those cowls, I think they could be a good seller as the RC market is in desparate need of scale outboard cowls. I know I'd buy a couple.

I have everything to make a few more, just need to make some time for it. I will let you know.
Thanks

Wow, it even has an upper removable cowl with a pin, and a lower pan. Great location for the telltale also, very scale. Awesome, awesome, awesome. I assume the decals are custom?
