Odesseys are OK the JP1200 equates to only 550CCA, I would use an Optima with 800CCA. I'm not a fan of any gel cell or dry cell battery for use in a boat. Gel cells and dry cells were designed for wheelchairs (not exclusively) and for use in sanitary environments. A boat is far from sanitary.

I've used Odysseys as well. I'm thinking about picking up some Braille batteries though - they spec out lighter and stronger than Odysseys. Trying to find more info on them though to see how they hold up to vibration, etc.

I use a little Odyssey too. My motor only needs about 250-275 amps to crank over.

If you know how many amps you are actually drawing you can probably use a battery much smaller and lighter than an 800 amp Optima (which is exactly what someone talked me into using before my Odyssey). My Odyssey only weighs 13 pounds, the Optima weighs 50 or so.

There are a lot of other uses for gel cells besides wheelchairs :)

If you've got a ton of excess money, and want a 16v that weighs 14#, you can use this:

Just one to start a V6?

when i bought my boat off a member of the board here, he turned me onto the odyssey batteries. he used a smaller one than what i have (about the size of the 625) to start his v6 drag motor on his allison.

Just one to start a V6?

MSD makes it easy to start if it has enough juice. But no, 2 @ 24v.

Most of the Champboat Drivers use Odyssey 925. Several SST-120 Drivers use the smaller lighter 625 which is interchangeable with YB16CL-B. The 120 is wired to crank on 24 volts and run on 12. Same with the Champboat. So both Boats have two batteries. The Champboat EFI motors use more juice to operate and do not put enough back in to recharge the battery so they need more battery. To run on 12 and crank on 24 you have to run another wire, 8 or 10 gauge from the battery to the rectifier. I can give you more details if your interested.
The Gel cells last longer in a Tunnel Boat, they don't leak. They say you can mount them in any direction. The standard lead acid setup has to have a vent and you have to keep an eye on the fluid. I have used both over the last 18 years. I was sponsored by Interstate in 1994. I use Odyssey now. The Champboat Two Seater is getting two new Odysseys for the Race in Pickwick this coming weekend.

Casey, do you or could you also run a bottle warmer off the three batteries?
How are those batteries linked?
