Ring 20

I am thinking of buying a ring 20 and I would like to know if any body knows how they ride and what engine would be good on it? Also do u think it could keep up with 22 progressions in offshore races?

I run a Ring 21. Great in the rough but the top end is not as good as it could be. I run a 2.0L race XR2 200hp on mine and she'll run mid 60's swinging a well worked 22 chopper.

Would deinitely see 70's im sure if she was running a 260 or 280 EFI. Some of the ski racers in the UK have run twin EFI's although i'm not sure what top end they see. :)

I am thinking of getting a merc 2.5 280 with offshore mid to put on it, that should push it pretty good.

Do u know any thing about 22 progressions?:confused: and if u do how would they compare to a ring 20 in offshore races both running 2.5 mercs

That would be a very intresting head to head I must confess. IMHO the Progression would be quicker in the calmer conditions with the Ring prefering the other end of the scale. Mike built them fairly bullet proof. So bolt everything & yourself in and go for it. Sure you can fit a 280 even twin 280's but I think it upsets the balance. They drive really well but attention is required when you pass the low 70's IMHO but that might be more to do with the fact that they are so very easy below that you sometimes forget how quick your going

Oh ya it is very rough on the south shore, we have a round the island race every year, this year 4 guys got thrown out of boats, one nose dived into wave and sunk and one hit a reef and ripped the lower unit right off the mid. Its pretty crazy :eek:

Could you let us know a little bit more about what boats run in Bermuda? Class size, Hulls etc? It was a long time since I was there on business... I remember the Robin Hood Pub!

There are only about 15 – 20 boat that race. We have A class which is modified 90hp motors there are a few 16 phantoms that run in that, FB class which is stock 150 evinrudes there are some 18 phantoms and a 21 allison, C class is modified 2.5L single outboard cats they run 21 skaters, D class is modified 2.5L single outboards there are a few progression and bat boats (ocke boats) in that (what I would like to run in with my ring :D ), S class is twin 2.5L there a couple 28 and 24 skaters and P class is unlimited any thing goes, this class is new and only a few boats a couple 28 skaters and a 30 spectre cats with 300 mercs.

How were these older hulls in relation to the newer model ones? Were they heavier, made differently, etc? Any help would be great..just like to know what I'm buying before I pay the cash..

The older hulls ie. Phantom, Ring, Marshan etc. set up really well in the hands of a good driver can still be competitive in the rough - but the Batboat is now way ahead in design and speed!

I've had two Ring 20's, 1st with 200 mec the one i have now has 225 yam,which is being sold in the spring,as i am going back to a Phantom 20 with a 225 yam.
I cannot put my finger on it but the Ring's i've had just do not handle as well as the Phantoms, had Phantom 20 and 18 in the past and both handled great.
You may want to consider something different, i had a 21 Wright / Campbell cat for years, had great fun and was very quick with a 200 merc on, but only a 2 seater though.

Yep the Lorne Campbell 21' cats were great fun - in a straight line!!!

Blufin on this forum saved my head being removed from an on coming fleet of boats after I tipped one over on a turn mark.

Apart from expensive freight are there any issues about buying a second hand UK boat in Bermuda?

No, I would gladly buy a second hand bout from the UK (or US for that matter) if I could find one and get it here for a good price. The problem is, with being in school, I don't have the available money to buy a nice boat away, get it shipped here, and pay duty on it.

Duty is 33% (I think, or thereabouts) and shipping would cost quite abit...at the end of the day I will have spent double the original cost of the boat...and thats what's offputting to me!

Yeah I seem to remember there was a heavy tax / duty issue with Bermuda, seem to remember looking in to it years ago for a guy I met over there.

Cheaper way could be to buy a set of plans from Lorne Campbell for a 21' cat and get a local boat builder/ carpenter mate to build one for you.

This has been done before.

Ring also did a 22 cat, lovely looking boat,My mate had one but even with a 250 vx yam injected still only did 58 mph on a perfect day,as they were very heavy.
I still say for the fun factor that 21 Wright / Campbell (C68 ex Tony Hamiltons) i had was just the daddys:) , had to sell it as the wood was at the point of no return,:(
It sits now on a roof of a Marine yard in Helensburgh painted in its colours
on show.

Think it was 2 litre class, Tony Hamilton raced it before i had it.
If i found a good example, i would have another, the plan until then is, the Ring 20 goes in the spring then to be replaced with a Phantom 20.
I am just about to embark on a BLUFIN style project on a single seater F3 16ft Burgess circuit race cat, But trying to find a Yam 70 s/shaft is proving hard!
I dont have a picture but there is one on BOATMAD gallery on the search type A-TECH there is only 1 photo.the blue on the picture had been changed to red before i bought it.
On the subject of Boatmad, since it came back on line again, for some reason does'nt seem to be the same, there are fewer interesting posting less banter etc could still be a good site,

think it was about 6. or so one got twinned with a pair of XR2's but TD (Extreme on here) would know for sure. You can still get one moulded in Belgium which is where the moulds got sold onto. I'd still like one at some despite the top end a reallly good all round performer and so stable purrrrrrfect for the family.

I have the rights to the Ring 20, I also have one of the last produced to use as tooling for the new updated version, the only thing I'm currently missing is some time to get it done.

I had hoped to get some on the water for the start of this season, hopefully it'll only be 1 year behind schedule.... :D Which is pretty normal in the world of boat building.

Do you know what condition there at? (how much product has been through them)
And how would this be taken lets say by others, if other boats were made to cover my costs only.
I did this with a set of 355 ferrari moulds for an MR2 again to cover my costs on another that i am building at the moment, which i suppose is classed as that forbidden word a SPLASH.
A few years ago i had this P20 Which can only be described as Faultless, i.e, Never sat on sand, only on water and carpeted bunked trailer from new.
So i want a as new Red P20 for me it's just the right size.

One foot for each year (must be a English thing) it's slightly different in Scotland, one foot = for each mental year,i float between 13/20 years, which for me is probably works out about right.
