i am the owner of an 18ft sidewinder with a 79 200 hp merc v6. I have a tm 6 inch set back manual djust jack plate and run a 22 pitch a4 big blade chopper @ 63 mph gps and 26 small blade chopper @ 65 mph ,but gets to scarry. I was curious about build a pad into the boat and hoping that raceman might be able to help with some dimensions and ideas.

I haven't seen a great variety of pad sizes tried on these boats, but I think I'd be looking in the range of 8". Some of the old Venture bassboats had wide pads (I'm talkin' 70's stuff) and I never liked the way they handled. The one on my 22' Pachanga is somewhere in that range (I can measure it tomorrow) and is actually more like a strake on both sides of the bottom of the V, and it handles well at speed. If you go to a full pad, rather than something that goes away in the middle, the height at the outer edges is going to be more than I think would be ideal on it. Again, in the case of the old Ventures, if my memory serves, the edges of the pad were a couple of inches high. I wouldn't want more than an inch out at the edges if I was doing one on a 18' SW. I'm thinking the function of a fabricated pad on the SW's with their rounded V bottom is more to keep the boat from wallowing around on the rounded V more than trying to get it to climb completely up on something.

Raceman I was looking at a pad on 1975 tmiate restoration through the sidewinder link in above @ realityboats and was wondering if a a 48"by about 9" pad of this type would be the answer.

i was also wondering about two stage reeds and Land and sea is out of business, is there another vendor that makes good quality reeds that can be revved to 6500 or so RPM. raceman

I have a 18' super that I started putting a pad on the other day. I went with a 7" x 60" x 1" pad. It seemed like the right size based on everything I was hearing and seeing out there. You can see the pics at sidewinder-boats.com under the restorations section.

RUDE - there is a way to calculate the size of pad that is best....

I run mid to upper 60"s until chinewalk gets so bad I have to change my pants...Everything I'm hearing says I should be more stable with the set up I've got after I add the pad
