I'm thinking of flying out there to watch as I have never been there before. I would like to know what hotels to stay at. I heard from a little birdy that the TFH record should be broken again. I hear it's a great set up to watch the races. Tom.

Tom,try Grace Inn at Awatoocky Best western in Pheonix/tempe area.It is only about four exits from track and is a real good deal if you tell them that you are with IHBA as spectator.Has real nice resturant in hotel too

Whats this Outboards at Firebird Lake. Wow it's been a long time since I've seen one show up. The last one I saw was the V8 and it went POW.
I guess he left the NOS on and then fired it up, boy what a fire it was. If you need info on a place to stay YELL. There is a Casino Hotel just down the street, it's all on the Reservation. And then I think that most of them stay in the Tempe Phoenix boarder area just north of the track. Gosh I could take my boat there like I did in the past and use it for a tow boat, and get paid a little for gas. I live about 10 minutes away from it. Just me and my Flow at the end of the quarter mile. OOOP'S miss spelling, Ahwatukee. But sounds like the way you spelled it. You will want to stay away from Guadilupe- little Mexico. Some good Hotels in Chandler just minutes from the track, there on Chandler Boulevard. And more on Ray road, one mile north. Wild Horse Pass is the one on the Res, fills up fast. I think Harra's has one as well about 20 minutes south on the John Wayne Parkway-347.

Yes it has been a long time. When I sold my sold my molds, I left boating for a long time. I just dudted off one of the boats that I saved for myself, it was built in 94 and has about 20 hours on it now. How many outboards do they run at FireBird? I did go to all of the reaces at FireBird but the CoorsLight World Finalls were the best. Maybe I will go out this year. I still have a shirt from The 726 Madness TFH in a plastic bag, that has yet to be signed. I had the old boat sold twice, made some good money on it because they couldn't come through with the rest. It was and still is a pain in the but to get any kind of Custom work done here in the Valley of the Sun. When you guys go to the races do you have all the Team Swag to sell? I liked stitting in the Cove, it was the best seat in the house, well next to the Island. Just called Nov. 61-19. I think I will go.

By the way, I use mold wax on my boat. I find that it works the best in that junky water. I also found that WD 40 works great to get in and around the tight spots on the motor. That is some nasty crap to get on the boat, and my boat used to sit in it all day long.

I have seen it at some auto motive paint stores. But I used to buy it from the place I bougnt my glass and resin, gell coat and all that stuff. I use "TR" regular and high temp. If you can call around to the shops close to you and ask them if they carry "mold release wax", I'm sure one of them will have it. If not just type in tr mold wax on the net and get from one of them. US COMPOSETS has it $12.15 a can, you should be able to get it in a few days. The stuff works. I spent 3 days in that lake every time the Drags came and that wax was killer. The salt beads just washed off with a hose, little to no elbo greese. And I would sray the WD on the motor and that blew the salty crap off as well. By the way don't forget the trailer. I know they have a hose at the top of the ramp where you put in, but not sure about the other where you get out. I'll be at your pit. It's nice that it's bean moved a week.
I was just married, headed to San Diago on the hunny moon. Driving by Firebird, ooooooh what DAT? Rooster tails in the desert??? Three years latter I built my first boat, in my back yard. For the next 10 years I spent my wedding Anavercery at FireBird. Two weeks of hell for 3 days of heaven. I'm lookin forward to seeing outboards run. I sure hated building jet boats.

Jon Wright ripped off a 8.01 to be 3rd qualifier in PE. Jim Dunn had an 9.06 to be 12th qualifier. I know Kevin Kraft and the Grand Prix tunnel both won the first round of competition but then IHBA said the clocks had malfunctioned and all 3 classes (RR, SE and ME) were not allowed. The races start at 7:30 AM Sunday and they said they should be able to get all eliminations done on Sunday. No official count but more than one person has said around 200 boats. I was on the in ramp when the ME's were running so I don't have much info. There is 29 pro mods and 9 fuelers (4.77 at 235 mph). Fuelers are struggling to make full passes. Cobra1racer, I'm helping the yellow outboard hydro. Stop by and see us. None of the over the hill gang is here. Jon Wright puked a motor and had a replacement on for the next round, can you say fast turn around? Sorry, not much other info. Oh yeah, Reid and Patsy and Rodney (helping Jon) make dinners that are delicious!! Tom

Well I got back late last night. What a spectacular time!! I didn't want to leave!! Not just beacause it was 30 degrees at home. Yes Jim's hydro is wood and his exibition pass of 8.57 at 127 was without nitrous. Jim went out first round with a -.08 red light. He ran a 9.13 while the other guy ran a 9.04 and a .09 reaction. I didn't hear any of Jon's numbers as we were washing the boat off. I'm 3 hours from Traverse city. Congrats Stoker and also Greg. There was 6 outboards there and Jon qualified 3rd in the 8's. I heard they were complaining about all the outboards there, wa wa wa! Nice to meet everyone there too. The TFH ran in the dark and 1 crashed, you couldn't even see the crash it was that dark. He was ok but they wouldn't pull the motor out until the bext morning, meaning it was probably junk. It was a great show though. I'm planning on next year already. Maybe do the Nascar the weekend before and stay the week. Tom.

They had timing tree problems. Although it's a perfect site to race they were pairing the boats on the trailers and that was kind of messy. They also had 2 barefoot skiers and the circle boats as well. It was great to see the fuelers run in the dark but I don't go out in the dark myself. Like Rocket said, let alone do 250 mph (I don't remember the numbers on the last pass but the Nitro Chicken did crash). Glad he was ok also. I don't know what they would do if a flock of outboards showed up. They were upset with Jim and then Jon ran a 7.93 and they really didn't like that. Tom

Phoenix is one great show! 200 + boats and they were able to get almost four full rounds on Friday. This in spite of the worst round of Top Fuel that I have ever seen and a parade of round-round inboards. Like SMITC, this is one race that everyone should try to make at least one time. The weather is really nice, no wind and other than water that smells like battery acid Phoenix is one fine racing facility.

Yes, outboards are a definite minority but this only adds to the fun. We went from, “no way the egg beater will run in the 8:00s” to “ Damn, not only did the egg beater beat us but he let off doing it!” In spite of our minority status, I think all the outboarders there would agree that the inboard crowd (at least within our classes) gave us a great welcome and were helpful with information and a helping hand when it was needed.

Our first round woes continued as the water pump hose came off at about 800 ft and burned number six. The boat was on a decent pass as we had run 124 at the 1/8th which was two MPHs faster than the record run. Not to be though…… and we had to change a motor between rounds. This could not have been done without Rodney Nance, Reid Scott and some help from our new inboard and outboard friends who were pitted next door and across the road. Many “thanks” to these guys for their help. We made the second round call but the boat did not run very well owing to the fact that I forgot to reset the timing.

The next rounds were better and made the show with an 8:01. Not bad for an “egg beater” . Got through the first found of eliminations but the motor did not want to crank the next time out and our day was done. The beater was headed home…………….. Not sure why the motor did not want to crank as it started OK about three seconds to late. May have been full of heavy fumes as we were pulled directly from the in-ramp to the starting line. The lights came on as soon as I got the belts tight. They do not fool around on race day so be prepared to run at all times.

As Stoker said, we did hose down one of our competitors with the prop. This was not good as the water is really bad and I am sure it took a long time to clean up the mess. Apologies were given but the driver was not really in a forgiving mood (at least as long as he was in the boat). Later in the staging lanes, we were right along side and he was in a bit better mood. Not sure I would have been because the water is so bad that if it had gotten into his eyes it could have meant a trip to the emergency room.

Some myths about Phoenix that I would like to address…..the IHBA officials made us feel welcome and let us start the boat on the ramp to warm the engine (this without asking). The safety inspectors went out of their way to provide us with missing stickers and a couple of other required items. Some of the in-boarders were a bit obnoxious but no more than some out-boarders that show up at almost every race. By in large the inboard crowd gave us a great welcome and when party time came a good time was had by all.

So save some vacation and head west next Nov if you want to join in and see a real boat racing spectacle. It’s one hell of a show. If the good Lord is willing and I can still climb in the boat “Doodad Racing” will be there to piss off some of the inboard crowd and to say “hello” to our new west coast friends (Great meeting all you guys and thanks for all the help). Are they pairing up the outboards with inboards? Were you guys runiing with them in the same ET bracket or what? If so that sounds like fun.

They pair you based on qualifying times. Inboard or outboard doesn't matter.

IO running with an Outboard- cool. So how do you go about gettiing into the show. What do you have to do to get a license to drag race? I have one for NASA and the SCCA, had to go to school, classroom and driving. I do remember guys making passes at 1/2 then 3/4 and then full throttle, to get a license to run. Oh yea what does it cost also? Thanks Ray.

You have to pass safety inspection, make a half track pass and make a qualifying pass in your class. Go to which ever orginazation you are interested in racing in web site for specific rules and fee info. IHBA would likey be the closest to you.

you do not need a lic to race, 10 11 or 12 sec classes. river race is a dial in class . had to race a day cruzer in world
finals. he diled a 17.85 rules are avaliable at IHBA . dont think rules on net but can , for 5 bucks ihba will. send you one. get your lifeline, meet us in phenoix in the spring. i'm boat 889. the armed forces special. kick some inboard ass.

Well I just bought a V8 300GT. I think it should work good on my 700 pound hull. Might have to send it to Dragon Master first. No ice on the lakes here so I can play all winter and not be bugged to much. Sounds like fun, what does it cost to run? I went to the IHBA web page, no rules. But I will call them to get the info. Thanks.

Thanks for posting pics cobra, before you know it we will be back there in April 2007.Sure wish they would do something with that salt/acid pond:( i was under my boat trailer yesterday cleaning off all the salt deposits when i noticed near the drain holes (mine is a full tube frame)that it is eating it away from inside out:mad: i have nightmares of the trailer breaking in half going down the highway:eek:

That stinks. I had mine in there years ago, used it for a tow boat. Five months later I was coming home from one of the other lakes. NO wheel bearings on one side. I'm suprised I even made it home. There was nothing left. It makes no sence to have it salty. We have a bunch of man made lakes here and no salt, and good fishing in them. I think Tempe Town Lake would be a good place to have F1 and Unlimited Hydro's at. They had the Miss Bud and the like on FireBird once or twice, two at a time. They were running up on the shore line, way to fast for a tight track like that.

I'm glad mine is not a tube trailer. Have you seen that show on SPEED from Canada. They talk about that Crown stuff. Do you think that stuff would work if you blasted it inside a tube trailer. They say it cuts down on rust??? Sports car revolution, I thinnk those guys have 2 shows on peed. Might be worth a shot. Spray it on the motor as well.

thanks . oppened the box ends on trailor , drilled frame, hosed down with wd 40, leave backed in river for two hrs. helps, but phnx wet stuff, not true water. checked was7 oz more than water from tap there. you could use to etche metal. it get on a positive wire will eat thru butt conectors , if your going to phnx. seal your wires and keep off floor. speak from exp. take care g.
