I recently bought this:

I think the D70 is overkill for the everyday guy who wants to take a good picture You can take a better picture with a D50 if you were to spend the same total money. Spend less on the camera and more on the lense.:D

I bought a D50 kit for my dad - great camera that takes impressive images. You can't go wrong with that or the Rebel XT. Keep in mind though, that the D70s kit has the best factory included kit lens (18-70mm AF-S DX) out of all three.

Here's an opinion looking at the D-50 vs D-70 cameras. One of many on Google.;)

the d70 is a great camera for what your doing. from the looks that canon is a film camera and not digital. the canon rebel are also good.

The lens you use will have the greatest impact on image quality (aside from your photographic technique, of course).

Thanks guys for the replies, Greg my photographic technique is next to non-exsistent, I can manage a point and shoot but thats about it... I am however willing to learn. As stated in orginal post I only really need it to take high Quality still shots, not concerned with Action or Long range abilites. I think ill just buy the D70 and have a play.

The D50 and D70 are essentially the same camera, so one will not be more overkill than the other. If you want a beginner SLR, both will work fine, but the extra features of the D70 and the [much] better kit lens are worth the extra cost.

The D70 produces the same image quality, although the D50 has slightly better noise control, the D70's images are slightly more crisp. I have used both - they both produce excellent results.

The D70/D70s is faster in continuous shooting mode (3 FPS vs. 2.5 for the D50), has a larger LCD screen (D70s model), uses CF cards instead of SD cards (which offer larger capacities), offers a depth of field preview, and most important in my opinion - the second command dial. The 18-70 AF-S kit lens included with the D70/D70s is worlds better than the D50 kit lens, although both work just fine. Autofocus systems on both cameras are exactly the same.

I keep a D70 as a lightweight backup body in my case, but I used the D50 I bought for my dad. My opinion is the D70 is a better value.

Bruster, I must admit I ran out of time to google it, however going on peoples responses it would seem the way to go is the DS70. Greg appreciate you taking the time to explain the benefits.
